Wayne County Historical Society Spring Open House

Location: Main Museum, 810 Main St
Time: Apr 21, 2018 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM

The Trustees of the Wayne County Historical Society announce the annual Spring Open House which will be held on Saturday, April 21 from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Main Museum at 810 Main Street, Honesdale. Tours of the exhibits will be held and the newest exhibit What’s New at the Museum? will be unveiled. This is a free event, open to the public. What’s New at the Museum? features many wonderful objects recently donated to the museum. A hand-carved wooden eagle with a 6” 5” wing span, created by Dick Kreitner for the nations’s bicentennial in 1976, towers above the exhibit, its gold leaf shinning. Dick’s children, Kitty and Ken, recently donated the eagle in loving memory of their father. A sofa attributed to early Honesdale furniture maker Alanson Blood was given to the museum as part of the Carlton Solon Slater estate and the executors of the estate generously gave the money for the c. 1850 sofa to be restored. Local business owners Harry and Beth DeVries used their “magic” to bring the piece back to its original beauty. A copy of an original pen and ink drawing entitled Where Locomotive First Appeared on American Continent, drawn and signed by David Matthew, May 27, 1884 includes a sketch of the Stourbridge Lion never before seen in Honesdale. The newly-acquired painting by Jennie Brownscombe entitled Spring will be on public display for the first time. Its gentle pastel shades remind the viewer that the days of spring will soon arrive. A group of Jennie-lovers contributed to its purchase which took place through an on-line art auction. An enlarged copy of the Paul Preston Letter will be exhibited. The letter has a first-hand account of the running of the Stourbridge Lion on August 8, 1829. Local scholars knew about this letter for decades, and now the museum has the letter in its archives! Many additional items will be part of the exhibit, such as local bottles, political pins and paintings, including a self-portrait of Gabrielle Feldman generously donated by her family. Gabrielle was an important member of the local art community for decades. WCHS takes the responsibility of cataloging and archiving the items that are donated to the museum very seriously, and the Trustees and staff thank all the members and friends of the museum for placing their trust in the Wayne County Historical Society. The exhibit will hang for one year, and everyone is welcome to visit the museum and see What’s New at the Museum. ______________________________________________________________ Contact: Carol Dunn Organization: Wayne County Historical Society, 810 Main Street, Honesdale PA 18431 Museum phone: 570-253-3240
